Photons propagating in strong magnetic fields are subject to a phenomenon called the “vacuum birefringence” where refractive indices of two physical modes both deviate from unity and are different from each other. We compute the vacuum polarization tensor of a photon in a static and homogeneous magnetic field by utilizing Schwinger’s proper-time method, and obtain a series representation as a result of double integrals analytically performed with respect to proper-time variables. The outcome is expressed in terms of an infinite sum of known functions which is plausibly interpreted as summation over all the Landau levels of fermions. Each contribution from infinitely many Landau levels yields a kinematical condition above which the contribution has an imaginary part. This indicates decay of a sufficiently energetic photon into a fermion–antifermion pair with corresponding Landau level indices. Since we do not resort to any approximation, our result is applicable to the calculation of refractive indices in the whole kinematical region of a photon momentum and in any magnitude of the external magnetic field.  相似文献

Abstract

Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of potassium dosed higher fullerenes are measured with a synchrotron radiation light source. Potassium dosing to higher fullerenes brings a new structure between the spectral onset of pristine fullerenes and the Fermi level. As the spectral edge of the new structure does not cross the Fermi level, potassium dosed higher fullerenes are not metallic but semiconductive. When the potassium is excessively dosed to the fullerenes, the lower binding energy structures above 5 eV become faint. In contrast to this phenomenon, four distinct structures appear between 5 and 14 eV.  相似文献

Galactose derivatives were explored as chiral dopants, effective for inducing chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) phases. Galactose bearing O-isopropylidene substituents at the C3 and C4 and butoxybiphenyl substituents at the C2 and C6 positions exhibits a high helical twisting power (HTP) value of ?74.4 μm?1. Such a high HTP value for the galactose derivative is attributed to (1) linkage of the C3 and C4 carbons with the O-isopropylidene substituent, which places the C2 and C6 substitutes in a skew arrangement at a large angle and (2) enhancement of the affinity with the host nematic LCs by incorporating aromatic substituents at the C2 and C6 positions that are similar to those in the host.  相似文献

Dexmedetomidine (Dex) is a selective central α2‐agonist with anesthetic properties and has been used in clinical practice for sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU) after operations. In this study, an analytical assay for the determination of Dex in a small amount of plasma was developed for the application to pediatric ICU trials. The quantification of Dex was constructed using the original stable isotope Dex‐d3 for electrospray ionization‐tandem mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS/MS) in the selected reaction monitoring mode. A rapid ultra‐performance liquid chromatography technique was adopted using ESI‐MS/MS with a runtime of 3 min. Efficacious concentration levels (50 pg/mL to 5 ng/mL) could be evaluated using a very small amount of plasma (10 μL) from patients. The lower limit of the quantification was 5 pg/mL in the plasma (100 µL). For sample preparation, a solid‐phase extraction was used along with the OASIS‐HLB cartridge type. Recovery values ranged from 98.8 to 100.3% for the intra‐ [relative standard deviation (RSD), 0.9–1.3%] and inter‐ (RSD, 0.9–1.5%) day assays. A stable test had recovery values that ranged from 97.8 to 99.7% with an RSD of 1.0–1.9% for the process/wet extract, bench‐top, freeze–thaw and long‐term tests. This method was used to measure the Dex levels in plasma from pediatric ICU patients. In the clinical ICU trial, the small amount of blood (approximate plasma volume, 200 μL) remaining from blood gas analysis was reused and targeted for the clinical analysis of Dex in plasma. Polymer-bound alkylthiopurine and -pyrimidine bases were prepared and used as the polymeric reagents for the reactions of nitrile, olefin, and enone formation. The corresponding low molecular weight compounds were also prepared for comparison. Nano-sized aromatic polyamide particles with trifluoromethyl groups were prepared via a precipitation polymerization method from 4,4′-diphenyldicarbonyl chloride and 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane in a dioxane solution containing pyridine. The average diameter of the particles decreased from ca. 500 to 150 nm as the pyridine content increased. The particles were spherical with narrow size distributions. Also, the inherent viscosity and yield of the particles decreased gradually as the pyridine content increased. For all the particles, the degrees of crystallinity were low, and the thermal decomposition temperatures were above 457 °C. The addition of pyridine significantly influenced not only the polymerization but also the affinity between the product and the reaction solution, resulting in a difference in the diameters and characteristic features of the particles. Furthermore, these characteristic features were found to be determined predominantly during precipitation from the reaction solution. Meanwhile, trifluoromethyl groups in the particles had significant influence on the morphology and characteristic features of the particles.  相似文献
